Long Island Railroad – East Side Access

Scan of the tunnel

Raw point cloud generated from the scan

Recently, we were asked to assist on the Long Island Railroad East Side Access project in NYC. This particular section of the project was deep below Midtown Manhattan as progress is being made to eventually link trains from Long Island to Grand Central Terminal. The purpose of the scan was to verify the limits and accuracy of excavation before the next phase of construction proceeds. Innovtec’s scanning played a key role by giving the project team the ability to document with pinpoint accuracy the tunnel that was over 80 feet from floor to ceiling. Our crew scanned the area in less than two hours. By comparison, traditional measuring methods would have resulted in a considerable increase in time, manpower, and ultimately the budget.
